Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate)

It’s Friday! That means I have the lyrics , meanings and tabs for another song this time it’s State Capitals.

Meaning:

When I was younger going on my first tours I hadn’t been out of IL much. Playing shows and sleeping on floors with your friends is quite an exciting way to see the country, and back then we had tons of free time and off days to wonder. A lot of times we would bring people who would just come and hang out, this song is about the first few tours, and about how new everything felt. In the song song I talk about Claire from Washington, she is a real person and that is her real name. I was taking a greyhound out to NY and she was tagging along with her friend just to see new states, when i was writing the song i felt it important to mention her and relate what she was doing to the rest of the song. I wrote this song a few months after I wrote ”Your Heart” and it was kind of shelved for a while I used a line from it in Every Letter ” When you read me lines from the books you love” altered from ”Describe to me all the books you’re reading” and I used it for the name of a band i was a part of for awhile, but the song did not get played again until my brother brought it up around the same time I was thinking of songs for Now That I’m Here, I Can’t Imagine Being Anywhere Else.

Lyrics

Remorsefully in tune
with the saddest songs you knew
you came along to see the countryside
I can make it through the night
if someone else can too
coffee and conversation in morning light

For a week you had hoped we’d meet
right outside of your state capital

Claire from Washington
heading East to visit friends
we traded stories on my ride home
of the weather and the west
and the cities she likes best
she came along to see the countryside

Describe to me all the books you’re reading
right outside of your state capital
